Book Review of 'Beyond the Bright Sea' by Lauren Wolk

Premise:

Twelve-year-old Crow has lived her entire life on a tiny, isolated piece of the starkly beautiful Elizabeth Islands in Massachusetts. Abandoned and set adrift on a small boat when she was just hours old, Crow's only companions are Osh, the man who rescued and raised her, and Miss Maggie, their fierce and affectionate neighbor across the sandbar.

Crow has always been curious about the world around her, but it isn't until the night a mysterious fire appears across the water that the unspoken question of her own history forms in her heart. Soon, a chain of events is triggered, leading Crow down a path of discovery and danger.

Vivid and Heart-wrenching

This story takes place in the Elizabeth Islands in the 1920s. Crow, a twelve-year-old girl, has always lived on a small island off of Cuttyhunk. She was abandoned and set adrift in a small boat as a newborn. She was raised by a man named Osh, who rescued her, and their neighbor, Miss Maggie, and Crow doesn’t know anything about her past. At first, she is happy where she is. But one night, Crow sees a mysterious fire across the ocean, and she starts to wonder where she came from, who set her adrift and why, and why none of the other islanders come near her.
My favorite part of the story is when Crow leaves her island for the first time in the book. This book is intended for ages 10-14 and is character-driven. The chapters are 6-8 pages long. The theme could be the true meaning of family. On a scale of one through five, I would rate it 4 stars.
